What is calcium hydroxylapatite and how does it work?

Calcium hydroxylapatite is a mineral that occurs naturally in the human body: it is the main component of bones and teeth. In aesthetic medicine it is used in the form of microspheres suspended in a carrier gel. Once injected into the skin, it works on two levels:
  1. Immediate result: the gel base fills wrinkles and areas of volume loss, improving the facial contour straight away during the treatment.
  2. Long-term result: the calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres stimulate fibroblasts to produce new type I collagen, which is responsible for skin firmness and density. This process happens gradually, and the results build up over the following weeks and last up to 18 months.
