How long hyaluronic acid lasts in the lips, tear troughs and cheeks

Prepared by the Dermapure team of specialists. Last updated: 20 October 2026.

“How long will it last?” is one of the first things patients ask at a consultation before hyaluronic acid filler. The short answer is usually anywhere from a few months to a year and a half. The longer answer depends on where the filler was placed, how much was used and how quickly your body breaks it down. Below is what we tell patients at Dermapure, area by area.

Why hyaluronic acid is absorbed

Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the skin. The hyaluronic acid your body makes itself is renewed very quickly. Fillers contain cross-linked hyaluronic acid, meaning it has been bound into a longer-lasting gel, so the body breaks it down far more slowly, bit by bit, over many months.

That is why the result does not vanish overnight. The volume fades slowly and the face returns to how it looked before treatment, with no clear point where the change happens. Absorption is also the reason hyaluronic acid filler is a reversible treatment.

How long hyaluronic acid lasts in each area

These are the approximate times we give on our treatment pages:

AreaHow long the result usually lasts
Lipsup to 12 months
Tear troughs12 to 18 months
Nasolabial folds9 to 12 months
Chin6 to 12 months
Cheeks (volume restoration)12 to 18 months
Nose6 to 18 months

Results vary from person to person. One person’s lips look good for almost a year, while someone else sees a clear loss of volume after eight months. It can only be judged more precisely after the first treatment, once we know how your body responds.

Lips usually lose the effect fastest because they are always moving when you talk, eat and smile. The tear trough area moves very little, so the filler lasts longer there. We write more about the treatment itself in our article Tear troughs and hyaluronic acid.

What affects how long the result lasts

Several things play a part at once:

  • the treated area and how much it moves,
  • the type of product, since soft, flexible fillers are used in the lips and denser ones in the cheeks or chin,
  • the amount of filler and how deep it is placed,
  • your individual metabolism,
  • lifestyle, including smoking and frequent sun exposure without protection.

None of these comes with a simple formula. That is why at the consultation we ask about previous treatments: when they were done, how much filler was used and how long the result was visible. For us this is the most useful guide for the future.

How to tell the effect is wearing off

Most often patients notice that the lip outline is less defined and the lips have lost a little volume, and that the shadow under the eye shows again in poorer light. The change is gradual, so it is easy to miss. Comparing with a photo of yourself taken a few weeks after treatment helps.

With lips, keep one thing in mind: right after treatment they look bigger because they are swollen. Once healed, they are roughly a quarter smaller than in the first few days. That drop is the swelling going down, not the filler being absorbed. The full result is usually visible after a few days, and the lips can take up to two weeks to heal. After 2 weeks you can come in for an optional follow-up visit.

When to top up and how often filler can be given

Usually when the effect is clearly fading but has not yet gone. At that point less product is normally needed than the first time. For tear troughs, our treatment page says plainly that the treatment is repeated every 12 to 18 months to maintain the result.

Topping up too often is not a good idea. Filler given every few months, before the previous amount has had time to be absorbed, can build up and give a heavier, less natural look. With lips, building the shape can be a gradual process over several months, but the gap between treatments is always decided by the specialist after looking at your face.

What happens to hyaluronic acid over the years

The body breaks down cross-linked hyaluronic acid completely, so it does not stay in the skin forever. Some of the product may, however, remain in the tissues longer than you can see in the mirror. This is one of the reasons we are more careful with the amount at later treatments.

If you no longer like the result and do not want to wait for the filler to be absorbed on its own, a hyaluronic acid product can be dissolved if needed. We do this at Dermapure too, including after treatments done at other clinics. You can find details on our page about the treatment of complications.

What to avoid after treatment so the effect lasts

For the first few days after filler we recommend:

  • not massaging the treated area, as this can move the product,
  • avoiding saunas, hot baths and strenuous exercise,
  • keeping the skin clean.

In the long run, sun protection and not smoking are good for your skin. There is no way, though, to stop the filler from being absorbed. If anything worries you after treatment, you can message or call us any day of the week.

When a top-up makes no sense

Sometimes a patient comes in for another top-up and the consultation shows that more filler will not improve their appearance. This can happen when the shadow under the eye comes from fat pads or a tendency to puffiness rather than lost volume. In that case we advise against the treatment or suggest another method, such as mesotherapy. If the face is losing volume in several places, it is sometimes better to plan facial volume restoration than to top up a single area.

We do not perform the treatment during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with active cold sores or skin inflammation in the treated area, with cancer or with blood clotting disorders, among other conditions. We go through the full list of contraindications at the consultation.

Frequently asked questions

How long does hyaluronic acid last in the lips?

Up to 12 months, depending on your health and lifestyle. Lips move a lot, so filler is absorbed faster there than in other areas. Results vary from person to person.

Why did my filler wear off sooner than my friend’s?

How long it lasts depends on the area, the amount and type of product, and your metabolism. Two people who had the same treatment can see the result last for different lengths of time. It is worth mentioning this before your next treatment.

Will my face look worse than before treatment once the filler is absorbed?

No. The filler is absorbed gradually and your face returns to how it looked before treatment.

Can I top up my lips after three months?

That is for the specialist to decide after looking at your lips. Topping up too often can give an unnatural result, so we usually wait until the effect has clearly faded.

Does hyaluronic acid stay in the skin forever?

No. The body breaks it down gradually. If needed, the product can also be dissolved sooner.
