How much hyaluronic acid do your lips need: 0.5 ml or 1 ml?

Prepared by the Dermapure team of specialists. Last updated: 20 October 2026.

The question of how much lip filler is needed comes up at almost every consultation before a first treatment. Patients are usually worried about two things: that a millilitre is too much and their lips will look overdone, or that half a millilitre will make no difference. We explain what the amount of product depends on, how 0.5 ml differs from 1 ml and why it is sometimes better to build the lips up in several stages.

How much lip filler is injected in one treatment

People usually talk about 0.5 ml or 1 ml, because lip products normally come in pre-filled syringes of those sizes. At Dermapure the treatment price includes 1 ml of hyaluronic acid. The specialist decides at the consultation how much of it goes into your lips and where, after looking at them and talking to you about what you expect.

The number of millilitres on its own says little about the result. The same amount gives a clear change in narrow, thin lips, but is barely visible in lips that are already full. The technique also matters a great deal, as does where the product is placed: into the lip border, the vermilion (the red part of the lips) or the corners of the mouth.

How 0.5 ml differs from 1 ml in the lips

Half a millilitre is a small amount. It is usually enough to subtly define the lip border, hydrate the lips or even out a slight asymmetry. People around you often will not notice that anything has changed, only that your lips look fresher.

One millilitre gives you more options. It can add volume to the lips, improve the balance between the upper and lower lip, lift the corners of the mouth and define the lip border at the same time. With a well-chosen technique, it still looks natural. In flat lip contouring, for example, we aim for a flat, subtle result.

So a larger amount does not automatically mean big lips. Results vary from person to person.

What determines how much product the lips need

Every pair of lips is different. At the consultation we take into account, among other things:

  • the starting size and shape of the lips and how they fit with the rest of the face,
  • the symmetry of the lips and the corners of the mouth,
  • how stretchy the tissues are, because this limits how much product the lips can take in one session,
  • how quickly your body breaks down hyaluronic acid,
  • whether this is a first treatment or the lips have been filled before,
  • the result you expect: subtle definition or a clear increase in size.

Only after weighing all of this can we tell whether a smaller amount will be enough or a full millilitre is needed, and whether it is worth planning a second stage.

Can big lips be achieved in one treatment?

With very small lips, one treatment is not always enough for a significant increase in size. The tissues need time to stretch, so getting the lips you want can take several months. Building them up step by step helps to achieve a natural-looking result and lets you judge along the way whether you like how they are changing.

Injecting a large amount of product into small lips all at once raises the risk that the result will look overdone or that the product will settle unevenly. That is why we prefer to do less and add more later rather than give too much straight away.

We agree the amount of product, the technique and a plan for any further stages at a free, no-obligation consultation. At the same consultation we also go through contraindications and how to prepare for the treatment.

Can you share a syringe with a friend?

No. One pre-filled syringe may be used for one person only, because once opened it is no longer sterile. The question often comes up when someone wants only half a millilitre and is looking for a way to avoid paying for the whole syringe. For safety reasons, we do not do this.

Why lips look bigger right after treatment

Straight after the treatment the lips are swollen. The swelling usually lasts about 3 days, depending on the individual, and the lips can take up to two weeks to heal. Once healed, they are roughly a quarter smaller than on the third day after the treatment.

This matters when you are judging whether 1 ml was too much. In the first few days, it is impossible to tell. The full result is usually visible after a few days, and at the optional follow-up visit after 2 weeks the specialist checks how the product has settled. If you do not like the result once your lips have healed, the hyaluronic acid can be dissolved if needed.

You can find photos of lips after treatments at our clinic in our results gallery, in the Lip augmentation and contouring section. They show how different the same treatment can look on different lips. Results vary from person to person.

How long the result lasts and when to top up

Hyaluronic acid is gradually absorbed by the body. The result lasts up to 12 months, depending on your health and lifestyle. After that, the treatment can be repeated.

At the next treatment, the amount needed may be different from the first time, because some of the product may still be in the lips. That is why we assess the lips afresh at every treatment.

When the treatment is not a good idea

For example, we do not perform the treatment during pregnancy or breastfeeding, when the skin around the mouth is inflamed or in people with certain autoimmune diseases. It is generally intended for adults. If you are planning to get braces, it is better to have your lips augmented once they are fitted, because braces change the shape of the lips. We write more about this in our article on contraindications to lip augmentation with hyaluronic acid.

It is also not a good idea to book the treatment just before a wedding, a photo shoot or a family celebration. Any injection treatment carries a risk of bruising, and the swelling may fall on that very day.

We advise against the treatment if the result you expect would require injecting far more product at once than the lips can take. In that case we suggest a plan in several stages, or we say plainly that the shape in question would not look natural on those lips.

How much 1 ml of lip filler costs at Dermapure

Lip augmentation and contouring costs 1300 zł with us. The price includes 1 ml of hyaluronic acid and a follow-up visit after 2 weeks, which is optional. The lips are also part of the Full Face treatment, in which we treat all the areas of the face that need filling. The package includes 4 ml of product, and we agree the exact scope at the consultation. Current prices are in our price list.

Frequently asked questions

How much lip filler do I need for my first treatment?

It depends on the structure of your lips and the result you expect, which is why a specialist assesses it at the consultation. For a first treatment we prefer a more cautious amount, with more product added later if needed.

Is 1 ml of lip filler a lot?

Not necessarily. In full lips 1 ml gives a moderate change, while in very narrow lips it can be clearly visible. The injection technique also affects how the lips look. Results vary from person to person.

Is 0.5 ml enough to see a result?

For subtle definition of the lip border, hydration or correcting a slight asymmetry, usually yes. A more noticeable increase in size generally needs more product.

Can I share a syringe with someone else?

No. One pre-filled syringe is for one patient only, because once opened it is not sterile.

My lips look too big after the treatment. Did I get too much filler?

In the first few days this is usually swelling. The full result is usually visible after a few days, and once healed, the lips are roughly a quarter smaller than on the third day.
