Swelling after lip augmentation: what it looks like day by day

Prepared by the Dermapure team of specialists. Last updated: 20 October 2026.

Lip filler swelling is a normal tissue reaction to the treatment, and in the first few days it is usually the swelling, rather than the result itself, that raises the most questions. Below we describe what lips usually look like day by day, what helps you stay calm during this time, when to call us and when you can judge the final shape.

What causes swelling after lip augmentation

The lips have a rich blood supply and delicate tissues, so they react to every injection. The hyaluronic acid itself adds to the swelling, because it binds water. That is why, straight after the treatment, the lips look bigger than they will be once healed.

How much the lips swell depends on the individual, the amount of product injected and the technique. Some people swell only a little, others quite visibly. Both are within the normal range.

Lips after hyaluronic acid, day by day

Here is what typically happens. Results vary from person to person, and so does the pace of healing.

The day of the treatment

You can see the difference straight away. The lips are fuller and may be slightly red, and tiny dots are visible at the injection points. The swelling usually builds up within a few hours of leaving the clinic.

Days 1 and 2

This is usually when the swelling peaks. The lips may seem too big, a little hard and uneven. If on the second day the shape is not yet quite right, this is a natural stage. Lips can take up to two weeks to heal.

Day 3

For many people the swelling starts to go down noticeably. On our treatment page we say that it lasts about 3 days, depending on the individual. If your lips still look unnaturally large on the third day, it does not mean they will need to be dissolved. Once healed, they are roughly a quarter smaller than at this point.

Days 4 to 7

The swelling gradually subsides and any bruises fade. They usually disappear after a few days. The full result of the treatment usually becomes visible at this stage, after a few days, once the swelling has gone down.

Week 2

The tissues regenerate and the product settles. Lips can take up to two weeks to heal. After that, you can come in for an optional follow-up visit.

Why lips swell unevenly

Swelling is often not symmetrical. One lip or one corner of the mouth may be more swollen for a few days, for example where a bruise has appeared or where there were more injection points. Many people also find the swelling is worse in the morning, after a night lying down.

Unevenness in the first few days does not yet tell you anything about the final result. Symmetry is only assessed once the lips have healed, ideally at the follow-up visit.

How to plan the treatment so the swelling does not get in the way

The simplest option is to book the treatment before a weekend. That way the most swollen days fall on your time off. Every injection treatment also carries a risk of bruising, which is why we do not schedule it right before an important celebration or family gathering.

A few days before the treatment it is a good idea to stop taking products containing ginkgo biloba and vitamin E, and not to drink alcohol the day before. This reduces the risk of bruising. We discuss any medicines you take regularly, including acetylsalicylic acid, at the consultation. Please do not stop taking them on your own. People prone to cold sores (herpes) should discuss antiviral prevention with a specialist before the treatment.

We go through all of this at a free, no-obligation consultation, where we also choose the technique and the amount of product.

How to reduce the swelling and what to avoid

For the first few days after the treatment we recommend:

  • not massaging your lips, as the product can move (if your lips need massaging, the specialist will do it at the follow-up visit),
  • avoiding very hot and very cold drinks,
  • skipping strenuous exercise, saunas and sunbeds,
  • taking care with hygiene: changing your pillowcase and towel, not cuddling pets close to your face and not touching your lips unless you need to.

If the swelling is pronounced, a cool compress wrapped in a clean cloth, applied briefly and gently, may help. Do not press on the lips or put ice directly on the skin. At night, you can sleep with your head slightly raised. If you are not sure whether something is allowed, it is better to ask than to experiment.

When swelling is a cause for concern

Most swelling after hyaluronic acid goes down on its own. Contact us or a doctor straight away if you notice:

  • severe, worsening pain, not just tenderness,
  • the skin turning pale, or a bluish, mottled discolouration on or around the lips,
  • swelling that starts to get worse after a few days instead of going down, with redness, warm skin or a fever,
  • small blisters on the lips, which may mean a cold sore flare-up,
  • shortness of breath or swelling in other parts of the face.

Our patients have a phone number they can call if any problems arise. We answer it every day of the week, including Sundays. We also help people who have had treatments at other clinics. You can read more on our treatment of complications page.

When to judge the result and what the follow-up visit is for

The full result is usually visible after a few days, once the swelling has gone down, and the tissues keep regenerating for up to two weeks. After 2 weeks you can come in for a follow-up visit. It is optional and included in the price of the treatment. At this visit the specialist checks the symmetry and how the product has settled.

If you still do not like the result once your lips have healed, the hyaluronic acid can be dissolved if needed. With very small lips, one treatment is not always enough, and fuller lips are sometimes built up gradually over several months. The result lasts up to 12 months. Results vary from person to person.

Photos of healed lips from treatments done at our clinic are in our results gallery, in the Lip augmentation and contouring section. The swelling of the first few days is no longer visible in these photos.

When the treatment is not a good idea

If you have a wedding, a photo shoot or an important presentation in a few days, it is better to postpone the treatment. Swelling and any bruising could fall on that very day.

For example, we do not perform the treatment on people who are pregnant or breastfeeding, who have skin inflammation around the mouth or who have certain autoimmune diseases. The treatment is generally intended for adults. If you are planning to get braces, it is better to have your lips augmented after they have been fitted, because braces change the shape of the lips. Our article on contraindications to lip augmentation with hyaluronic acid covers this in more detail, and we go through the full list at the consultation.
