The laser light penetrates the vessel, and the energy of the beam is absorbed by haemoglobin, the pigment in red blood cells (erythrocytes). The temperature rises and the heated red blood cells coagulate. This is a natural, irreversible reaction of proteins to a rise in temperature. As a result of this process the blood vessel is closed, and over about 3 weeks it is resorbed (absorbed by the body) and is no longer visible.
